Mrs, Maryland International 2011 Farewell

My journey to pageantry was through a promise I made my daughter who was leaving for college. She made me promise that I would compete since I was already very active in our community and she through it would be a great way to distract me since she would not be home. I have been mentoring my daughter and her friends for years and always telling them to not be afraid of stepping out of their comfort zone and I was now being mentored by my daughter to do the same.
Last February, I was honored and blessed to be crowned Mrs. Maryland International 2011 and what an amazing journey and a blessing to represent you with passion and purpose. I have been afforded an opportunity to use my title to continue promoting the idea that community service and volunteerism is a way of life. As an Ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA), I collaborated with them to recruit mentors to change the odds for high-risk children across the region and to actively promote and highlight their efforts across the State of Maryland. I have collaborated with Comcast to secure a grant for BBBSNCA, produce and air PSA’s that ran on CNN across the Region to millions of customers in our efforts to recruit mentors.
One of the most memorable moments this year was interviewing Venus and Serena Williams at the South East Tennis Foundation 10 Year Gala celebration. They were both involved in the ground breaking ceremony and came back to support the organization for the gala. They shared their experiences of growing up playing tennis and how that can be an outlet for our young people in helping them follow their dreams. The second was being selected as one of City Year’s 2011 Idealists of the Year Awardees for my volunteerism and community service locally and nationally.
Passion: My Passion runs deep in wanting to see that there is support, guidance and love for our young women. They are buds and petals waiting to blossom into full roses and should be given every opportunity to reach their full bloom. It comes from my daughter asking me to help some of her friends who needed someone to help guide them and to talk to when they felt unsure. I knew what that was like as a teenager and wanted to make sure I did what I could in order for any young woman I met did not have that feeling.
Purpose: My Purpose is to be a conduit from which we can help develop positive characteristics in our young women that will help them be exemplary citizens. I am thankful, humbled and give honor to God who has blessed me with the ability to make a difference in the lives of others through mentoring and empowerment. I acknowledge that through faith, hard work and determination, I have been blessed professionally and personally. For that reason, I operate under the notion that it is my duty and purpose to give back and help others. “To who much is given, much is expected”.
One of the gratifying benefits has been having DeShawn Shepard as my State Director. DeShawn has been amazing, dedicated and diligent in guiding me through my year and preparing me for Nationals. Thank you for your faith and confidence in entrusting me to represent our wonderful State. I love you and appreciate your friendship and kindness and thanks for sharing your family. To my prep team for Nationals, Deanna McCreary-Madison Donovan Group, Tracey Jamison - Pageant Perks and Hassana Blackwell- Artisty by Hassana, thanks for all of your work in getting me ready and I love you all.
I was blessed to share my year with Ciji Dodds, Miss Maryland International 2011 and went on to be crowned Miss International 2011. I am so proud of her and know that the world will see her commitment and passion for her platform and making and being a difference in the lives of others. Everyone thought we were sisters when we did appearances and that is what I have felt over the year my Sister Queen. I look forward to supporting you through your year as Miss International 2011 and cannot wait for our next appearance. Just know that “Pretty Girls Rock”!
I was able to share this amazing year with my wonderful husband Kenneth Grier. He has been by my side at most of my appearances and events and shares in my passion and purpose. I could not have made it through this year without my best friend, supporter and confidant. Thank you for being the better part of me and for being there with me through my journey. To my daughter Saniel, I love you and want to thank you for mentoring, inspiring and reminding me that determination and commitment in everything you do is why you are my hero.  Thanks to my family, friends, sponsors and mentees for all of their love and support before, during and after Nationals.
Good luck to my successor Mrs. Maryland International 2012. I wish you all the best in your journey representing our state. You will have a phenomenal team preparing you for and through Nationals. You will have an amazing year and it will go quickly so enjoy every moment.
Sincerely

Sandra Bryan Grier

Adopt a Family with Mrs. Maryland Intl 2011 and Valuable Blessings Inc.

Back to School is such an important part of the school year for families and especially children. When you are in a situation where your are not able to provide the necessary resources and items needed to have your children be successful then you feel helpless. Especially when you are physically incapable of providing what you know is needed to help your children. Well, that's where "Valuable Blessing Inc" and Mrs. Maryland International 2011 comes in and goes to work in helping meet their needs.

With a lot of great friends and family supporting to collect donations to cover text books for one student who did all he was expected to do and received a scholarship for tuition but needed to pay for his books. The needs of the remaining 3 children were for uniforms, books and general school supplies. Mrs. Maryland collected about $300.00 towards textbooks and will be donating the other items to Valuable Blessing this week. If you are able to support the Adopt a Family please contact me as soon as possible. To who much is given much is expected. Thanks to all of my family and friends who have been so supportive in helping me not just make a difference but be a differencein the lives of others.

Royalty on the Runway - Maryland Fashion Week 2011

I was honored to be selected to participate in "Royalty on the Runway" for Maryland Fashion Week. Deanna James - CEO and President of Madison Donovan Group developed and coordinated the event with the production company for Maryland Fashion Week 2011. We had a great opportunity to talk about our platform and promote the International system during the VIP reception and during intermission. Queens were also asked to participate in the show by modeling one of our pageant gowns. I selected my favorite emerald green gown and it was well received. Thanks to my amazing Publicist, Deanna James for managing this appearance.

Thanks to Madison Donovan Group and Deanna McCray James for securing tickets for the MD International titleholders to attend the Heart and Soul Awards Gala in Baltimore, Md. I had an amazing and memorable evening walking the Red Carpet, being treated as VIPs and rubbing elbows w/ Boris and Nicole Ari Kodjoe, Vanessa Williams, Michael Baisden, Jeff Bradshaw, Kindred The Family Soul, Jeff Majors and other VIP guests.
The highlight of the evening was meeting the community activist and award recipients who were honored for all of the work they do to make a difference in our communities and across the world. Awardees ranged from the First Lady Michelle Obama, Doctors who not just heal your wounds on the outside, they help you heal on the inside. Fitness and health minded people who worked diligently to keep their body healthy both inside and outside and help inspire others to do the same. Community activists who are engaged in revitalization of areas where planting seeds of change not just improve the environment but is a pathway to economic prosperity for its residents.  Awardees that were driven to make a difference through and by what they were experiencing and used that to change the lives of others. One of the Awardees was Ambassador Susan Johnson-Cook, Ph.D. and was recently confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador on Religious Freedom and the first African-American woman to hold that position. She will be traveling the world, representing, and promoting tolerance for all religions. I had an opportunity to speak with the Ambassador and know that her work will be challenging but resolved that she has the heart and ability to be an amazing representative for our county.
The awards ceremony was hosted by Boris Kodjoe and Vanessa Williams. The entertainment by MAYSA, Kindred The Family Soul and Doreen Vail and we were assigned special seating in the front row. Thanks to Hear & Soul Magazine for all they do in helping us live healthier, wealthier and wiser lives and for acknowledging some of the most remarkable women and one very special man for doing the same in their lives and others in their communities.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® - 2011 Washington D.C.

I was honored to be invited to participate in the

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®

on the National Mall. I had an opportunity to be in attendance to meet and greet attendees who would visit the Global Tour Pink Bus that provided relevant information through a computer simulated program for everyone who participated. I met attendees who were there walking or racing in loving memory for a family member or friend, others who were there to celebrate life as "Survivors" or there to support the organization as they work to find a cure. Most touching were the young children who were walking for and with their mothers, aunts and grandmothers who were fighting or survived breast cancer.

Until there is a cure we all have to be vigilant in being aware of early detection, yearly exams as needed based on age or history and knowing your body to address any changes. This is not a disease that only affect women, it has been a equal opportunity disease and men and women have the same battle ahead in working together to find a cure for breast cancer. Look forward to volunteering again next year and for any other events and opportunities they have in our area.

Presenting to some of my Mentees at Bishop McNamara H.S. - Spring Athletic Award Ceremony

I was so proud and honored to present the Spring Track and Field Awards to my mentees. They have a magnificient outdoor spring season with the girls team receiving runner up at the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championships along with the girls and boys teams winning the 4x400 relays. It was great to celebrate the seniors who I remember coming in as freshmen nervous about being on the big stage of competing against juniors and seniors. They have been award scholar honors and conference honors and should be very proud of their accomplishments as they get ready for the next chapter of ther journey into college and competing at a higher level.

Good Luck and looking forwad to all of the great things that you will be accomplishing.

Arthritis Foundation Walk - Lets Move Together

The Arthritis Foundation Walk - Lets's Move Together was held on the National Mall. I was joined by Miss Virginia and Miss Pre-Teen Virginia and we were eager and ready to help in anyway needed. It was great being a part of the event, do warm ups with the walkers and cheering them on as they crossed the finish line. I met a lot of children who are suffering from arthritis ailments and they were all very brave and strong in attitudes towards what they go through everyday. None of them gave up during the walk and all of them came across the finish line smiling or racing someone in their group. The Arthritis Foundation and their sponsoring organizations are dedicated to research and finding a cure and their work is to be commended. I am really looking forward to participating again next year.

Mentoring Symposium with Renaldo ("Skeets") Nehemiah & Sandra Bryan Grier at Bishop McNamara H.S.

Sandra, Mrs. Maryland International with Renaldo ("Skeets") Nehemiah and Bishop McNamara H.S. Track and Field Team after a mentoring symposium.

Renaldo ("Skeets") Nehemiah -World Champion Hurdler - First to break the 13 second barrier with 12.93 seconds and Former San Francisco 49ers Football Player. Thanks to "Skeets" for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak to the BMHS track team on what it takes to be a World Champion, dedication needed to be competitive and life skills that can be learned through competition. "Skeets" shared the hard work and dedication he had in being determined to break the 13 second barrier in the 110M Hurdles. His dream was almost shattered when he became injured but he did not let that slow him down or stop him from going after his goals. The challenges he had made him stronger and more focused in getting to his targeted goal.

As the team mentor, administrator and recruiting advisor I discussed the planning and preparation needed to secure student-athlete scholarships. I discussed how your commitment, dedication, behavior and focus can be visible to college coaches who you may not know are watching you but know who you are and how that can me a deciding factor in if you are or are not considered. I presented a gift to "Skeets" to thank him for taking time out of his schedule to attend the symposium.

South East Tennis Center - Tennis Ball 2011

WOW! How else do you explain having an opportunity to interview Grand Slam Champions Venus and Serena Williams. I had the privilege of interviewing the Williams sisters on Thursday at the 10th Anniversary of the Tennis Center. They were very engaging and wanted to know all about my title, crown and how I decided to compete. They were at the Center for the Grand Opening 10 year earlier and were able to be here for the anniversary to see what a great job the center has been doing. They played tennis with the kids during the day, saw the activities that center provided, which ranged from sewing/design, computer, life skills and of course tennis.  The interviews will be on Comcast/CNN at the top of the hour and bottom of the hour by the end of the month.
Photo #1: Sandra and Serena - Photo # 2: Sandra, Venus and Sandra's Husband Kenneth Grier. Thanks to my wonderful husband for accompanying me on these adventures.

WEAA Membership Drive

I was a special guest for the "Baseman Show" with Marcellus Shepard at WEAA-FM on the ground of Morgan State University for their Spring Membership Drive. I was on air assisting with getting listeners to call in and donate or renew/sign up for membership. Met Kim Chase, Singer Mesa and Dr. Renee during the segment and talk about being Mrs. Maryland International 2011, platform and why I participated in the system and what ahead of me for 2011. I am so looking forward to hopefully supporting them again in 2012.

Mrs. Maryland Easter Basket Drive

Thanks to all of my family members and friends who were instrumental in donating items to create the 35 Easter Baskets and 10 Easter Bags for the residents of Shepherd's Cove Shelter. Also, thanks to my team members at work who were so supportive in donating items and giving their time to help make the baskets. It was great to have an opportunity to see how happy the kids were who received the baskets and just how much fun they had going through their baskets. Looking forward to next year. Just absolutely "love" being the Easter Bunny.

Comcast Cares - Shepherd's Cove Clean Up

I participated in the Comcast Cares Day beautification and clean-up of Shepherd's Cove Shelter. We painted, cleaned up debris, cut shrubs, planted flowers and mulched the two playgrounds on the facility. It was a great opportunity to help make the facility more comfortable for the residents. So glad to be able to make a difference in the lives of the parents and children residing at the facility.

2011 White House Easter Egg Roll

I received tickets to take two of my mentees, Jordan and Kenyoni and my wonderful husband Kenny to the Easter Egg Roll at the White House. It was a great adventure. We caught the train and decided to get there about 2 hours early in preparation for a very busy day. We were at the front of the line as we started to queue to enter the grounds and as we walked in met one of the Harlem Globetrotters players. We went over to the stage to see Willow Smith perform. She was great and the girls had a wonderful time. We moved over to the egg coloring, face painting, the First Lady garden, to see the White House Chef and then to make crowns and a kite. It was really crowded and there were lots of activities. Jordan and Kenyoni did not want to wait in line for the egg roll but wanted to explore. Great time

Bishop McNamara H.S. Track and Field Invitational 2011

As Bishop McNamara H.S Track and Field team mentor, recruiting Advisor and Administrator I served as the commentator/announcer for the 1st H.S. Track and Field Invitational on April 23. 2011. It started out to be a very wet and cold day and ended up being one of the best days we had all month. I met a wonderful young lady by the name f Katie from Archbishop Spaulding H.S. Her family sat outside the press box and were just great in checking in on me through out the day. Great accomplishment for Michael Williams who set the national record on the men's 400 Meter Hurdles at the event. He was also selected as the MVP athlete of the meet. The meet was covered by Carl Little of The Washington Post and Terron Hampton of The Gazette Newspapers. We received very positive feedback from the 41 participating schools as far as New Jersey and Delaware and look forward to hosting and participating again next year. Go Mustangs!

“Fashion Deliver” – 1st Annual Cinderella’s Gala and Workshop

When “The Fashion Industry Delivers”, they really deliver. This partnership with non-profit organizations and the military provides free new evening gowns, dresses, suits, shoes,
WOW!
What every woman dreams for is to be able to go shopping, be pampered and leave feeling like a Queen for free. Fashion Delivers teamed up with Fort Meade Volunteer Community to host female soldiers, spouses and daughters for a magnificent day of pampering. Women were treated to sessions on dressing for your body type, which was presented by Executive Director of Mrs. & Miss International Pageants for Maryland and Virginia; Ciji Dodds, Miss Maryland Int’l. 2011 and Sandra Bryan-Grier, Mrs. Maryland Int’l. 2011.  The presentation focused on the four body types and what clothes looks best for each body type to heighten your positive areas and not bring attention to your not so positive areas. We used examples of clothes and accessories that would complement the various body types that were present. There were presentations on how to apply makeup, where to shop for the best deals and homemade makeup tips and how you can save money by making some of the items yourself.
We helped women select gowns, dresses, shoes and accessories along with helping them pose for the red carpet and posing for their before and after photos. As a military wife I know firsthand what kind of commitment and dedication is required to be the spouse of a service member or to be the daughter or mother. It was an honor to be of service to the women in the military who give of themselves and their loved ones to protect the freedoms we have every day. I am looking forward to being of service again in 2012 and can’t wait to try out some of the tips given on home made products and to check out some of the well kept secrets of sale days for local stores.

Cherry Blossom Gala Cruise

I was a Sponsor’s guest for the Cherry Blossom Dinner Cruise and enjoyed meeting all of the Dignitaries from India, Japan, Turkey and mostly the 2011 Goodwill Ambassadors. All of the 2011 Cherry Blossom Goodwill Ambassadors are students at local Universities who are majoring in International Relations. It was great to have an opportunity to speak with them about their experience and their future goals.

N Street Gala

Mrs. Maryland Sandra Bryan-Grier and Kenneth Grier

My husband and I attended the 2011 N Street Gala as a Sponsor’s guest.  N Street Village was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit organization in Washington D.C. to which provides empowerment, shelter and related support to homeless women. They have been instrumental in meeting the needs of women who need the level of support and encouragement that they would not be able to receive while homeless. The Gala recognized and honored Kathleen Sebelius – Secretary of Health and Human Services along with Wendy Mayer and Jane Saari who volunteers with the Village.
The three previous residents Camela, Renee and Carol who received awards well deserved because of their hard work and dedication to turning their life around and then paying it forward by now providing support to current residents of the Village. Congratulations to them and their families and to N Street Village for having such a positive impact on our communities and continuously making a difference in the lives of women in need.

Greater Washington Urban League Gala 2011

It was great to be a guest for the Greater Washington Urban League 2011 Gala. With this year's focus of "You, Me, We, DC" the gala highlighted the involvement of all the corporate partners and community organizations that make up Washington D.C. in a video presentation. The work of the GW Urban League is vital to community initiatives and supporting scholarships for well deserving students. The recipients covered a broad spectrum of students from different backgrounds and areas of study. It was great to see the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi representing as host for the event and providing support for the League. Had a chance to meet the NBC Anchors Lindsay Czarniak and Craig Melvin. Looking forward to participating again next year.
